How to read a GSTIN

Every GSTIN is built the same way, so a lot can be read before any lookup. The state code tells you where the registration is, the PAN in the middle tells you who, and its fourth letter tells you what kind of entity. All 36 state codes →

CharactersExampleMeaning
1–227State or UT code of the registration (27 Maharashtra, 29 Karnataka, 07 Delhi, 33 Tamil Nadu, 36 Telangana). A business registered in three states has three GSTINs.
3–12AAPFU0939FThe PAN of the taxpayer. Its fourth character is the constitution: P individual or proprietor, C company, F firm or LLP, H HUF, T trust, A association of persons, G government, L local authority, J artificial juridical person.
131Entity number: how many registrations this PAN holds in the state. 1 for the first, 2 for a second business vertical, then A–Z after 9.
14ZAlways Z, reserved for future use.
15VCheck character, calculated from the other fourteen. If one character is mistyped the check fails, which is how the tool catches typos before the lookup.

What the status means

The status is what the department shows on the portal today. It decides whether an invoice with this GSTIN supports input tax credit.

Active

Registration in force. The holder can issue tax invoices and the buyer can claim credit, subject to the supplier filing returns and paying the tax.

s.16(2), CGST Act
Suspended

Paused by the department, usually because returns are overdue or a cancellation is being processed. No taxable supply should be made against it while suspended; the holder cannot file returns for the period.

Rule 21A
Cancelled

No longer valid from the cancellation date shown. Invoices dated after that carry no credit. The taxpayer may have applied for cancellation or the officer may have cancelled it for non-filing.

s.29
Inactive / provisional

Provisional IDs from the 2017 migration that never converted, or numbers that were never activated. Treat as unregistered until the status changes.

Rule 24
Regular vs composition

The taxpayer type tells you whether the supplier is on the regular scheme (charges GST, you can claim credit) or the composition scheme (pays a flat rate, cannot charge GST on the invoice, no credit for you).

s.10
Not found

A number that passes the format check but is not on the portal has never been issued. Check the invoice again, then ask the supplier for their registration certificate (FORM GST REG-06).

Rule 10

When to verify a GSTIN

Before onboarding a supplier

Match the legal name and the state on the certificate to the portal. A trade name on the invoice is fine, but the legal name must be the one the portal shows.

Before claiming input tax credit

Credit needs an active supplier who has filed the return in which your invoice appears. A cancelled or suspended GSTIN at invoice date is the most common reason a claim is reversed.

Before paying an invoice with GST on it

A composition dealer or an unregistered person cannot collect GST from you. If the number is on the composition scheme or not found, the tax line on that invoice is not payable as GST.

When a customer asks for a B2B invoice

Confirm the customer's GSTIN belongs to them and is active in the state you are shipping to; the place of supply and the tax split (CGST + SGST or IGST) follow from it.

Checking your own registration

After an amendment or a change of address, confirm the portal shows the new details. Officers rely on what the portal shows, not on what was filed.

Checking a competitor or a lead

The registration date, constitution and principal place of business are public. Useful for due diligence before a deal or a partnership.

Questions about GST number search

How do I search a GST number and see who it belongs to?

Type the 15-character GSTIN above. The tool first checks the structure and the check digit locally, then asks the GST portal for the registration behind it and shows the legal name, trade name, status, registration date, taxpayer type and principal place of business. A number that passes the format check but is not on the portal has never been issued.

What do the 15 characters of a GSTIN mean?

Characters 1–2 are the state code (29 is Karnataka, 27 Maharashtra, 07 Delhi). Characters 3–12 are the PAN of the business; the fourth character of the PAN tells you the constitution: P for an individual, C for a company, F for a firm or LLP, H for a HUF, T for a trust. Character 13 is the number of registrations that PAN holds in the state, 14 is always Z, and 15 is a check character computed from the other fourteen.

What does "Cancelled" or "Suspended" status mean on a GSTIN?

Active means the registration is in force and the holder can issue tax invoices. Suspended means the department has paused it, usually while a cancellation is being processed or returns are overdue; no taxable supply should be made against it. Cancelled means it is no longer valid from the cancellation date shown. Invoices carrying a cancelled or suspended GSTIN do not support an input tax credit claim.

Why should I verify a supplier's GSTIN before paying an invoice?

Input tax credit is only available on invoices from a registered supplier whose registration is active and who files returns (section 16 of the CGST Act). Checking the GSTIN against the portal, and matching the legal name to the invoice, is the quickest way to catch a fake or lapsed number before the credit is denied at reconciliation.

Can I find all the GSTINs of a company from its PAN?

Yes. Switch the search to PAN, enter the 10-character PAN, and the tool lists every GSTIN registered under it, state by state, with the status of each. Click any row to open the full record for that registration. This is the quickest way to see where a supplier or customer is registered, and whether a particular state registration is still active.

Can one PAN have more than one GSTIN?

Yes. Registration is state-wise, so a business with a place of business in three states holds three GSTINs, each with the state code in front and the same PAN in the middle. Within a state, separate business verticals can also register separately; the 13th character counts them.

Is the data shown here live?

Yes. Each lookup queries the GST portal through a licensed GST Suvidha Provider connection and the result is cached briefly. The registration date, status and address are those on the portal at the time of the query; the tool does not store or edit them.
