Where India’s companies are registered: state by state and city by city, from the MCA register

Key takeaways

  • The MCA register holds 3,409,729 companies and LLPs with a registered office in India; 71% are active, the rest struck off, dissolved, dormant or in liquidation.
  • Maharashtra alone accounts for 755,653 registrations (22% of the register). The five states with the most new incorporations in the last twelve months took 57% of them.
  • 317,437 companies and LLPs were incorporated in the twelve months to June 2026. The state table shows each state’s share, and the city table where our virtual office cities sit.
  • A registered office is what puts a company in a state: it decides the Registrar of Companies, the state stamp duty on incorporation and where notices go. It does not decide where you pay GST — that is state-wise on its own.
  • The register counts registered offices, not economic activity: a company registered in Delhi may operate from Bengaluru. Read the numbers as “where founders chose to register”.
  • Figures refresh when the Ministry publishes a new master file; the date under each table is the newest incorporation in the data and is the date to cite.

India has one national company register, kept by the Ministry of Corporate Affairs, and every company and LLP on it belongs to exactly one state: the state of its registered office. That single fact decides which Registrar of Companies handles its filings, which state’s stamp duty applied when it was incorporated, and where a summons or a notice is served. This report reads the register state by state and city by city.

All figures are computed from the Ministry’s company master as imported by SimplySetup; the newest incorporation in the data is dated 2 June 2026. Counts include every entity with a CIN or LLPIN, and the Active column removes those struck off, dissolved, dormant or under liquidation.

Key figures

  • 3,409,729 companies and LLPs on the register, of which 2,411,247 (71%) are active. 510,043 are LLPs.
  • Maharashtra has the most registered offices: 755,653, or 22% of the register.
  • 317,437 entities were incorporated in the twelve months to June 2026. The five busiest states for new incorporations: Maharashtra (66,179), Uttar Pradesh (35,199), Delhi (28,423), Karnataka (26,455), Gujarat (25,033) — together 57% of the year’s total.
  • This edition covers 21 states and union territories.

Not yet in this edition (the Ministry’s file for these was unavailable at import): Himachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Meghalaya, Chhattisgarh, Dadra & Nagar Haveli and Daman & Diu, Goa, Lakshadweep, Puducherry, Telangana, Ladakh. They are added as the files are released; totals and shares are for the states listed.

Where new companies went in the last twelve months

The stock of companies is dominated by the old commercial capitals; the flow of new incorporations is more spread out. Maharashtra (66,179), Uttar Pradesh (35,199), Delhi (28,423), Karnataka (26,455), Gujarat (25,033) lead the year. A state that is high on new incorporations but lower on total stock is one where a first-time founder is in the majority — which is exactly where a registered-office kit and a clean name check save the most trouble.

Registered office, not head office. These counts are where companies chose to register, which is often the founder’s home state or the state with the simplest stamp-duty arithmetic, not where the business trades. A Delhi-registered company selling from Bengaluru appears under Delhi here and needs a Karnataka GSTIN there.

Registered offices in the cities where SimplySetup lists addresses

Matched on the city element of the registered office address, so these are lower bounds: an address written as a suburb, a district or an industrial estate is not counted against the city. Each city links to its live virtual office listings.

What kind of companies they are

By class on the register:

  • Private: 2,661,710 (78.1%)
  • LLP: 510,043 (15%)
  • Public: 144,096 (4.2%)
  • One Person Company: 88,611 (2.6%)

The private limited company remains the default vehicle; one person companies are a small share, and LLPs are counted separately. Public companies are a rounding error by count but not by size.

By principal activity (top twelve, as classified on the register):

  1. Business Services — 835,755
  2. Trading — 497,807
  3. Community, personal and Social Services — 476,051
  4. Construction — 261,613
  5. Manufacturing (Metals and Chemicals, and products thereof) — 210,012
  6. Real Estate and Renting — 202,352
  7. Finance — 154,809
  8. Manufacturing (Machinery and Equipments) — 147,235
  9. Transport, storage and Communications — 138,382
  10. Agriculture and Allied Activities — 122,473
  11. Manufacturing (Food stuffs) — 100,904
  12. Manufacturing (Textiles) — 78,974

Incorporations by year

Entities on the register today by year of incorporation. Earlier years are thinned by strike-offs, so the table understates how many companies were formed in a given year and overstates the recent tilt; it is still the best public picture of when India’s live companies were born.

Year of incorporation Companies & LLPs on the register
2019 151,168
2020 165,467
2021 197,339
2022 190,937
2023 198,082
2024 217,987
2025 292,784
2026 (to June 2026) 150,254

What the registered office actually decides

Under Section 12 of the Companies Act 2013 a company must have a registered office capable of receiving communications within thirty days of incorporation, and must file any change in FORM INC-22 within thirty days. The office fixes three things: the Registrar of Companies that processes every filing, the state stamp duty on the memorandum, articles and the SPICe+ form, and the place of service for notices and summons. It does not fix where the company pays GST, which is registered state by state on its own, and it does not stop the company operating anywhere else.

That is why a registered office can be a virtual office: the law asks for premises that can receive post and a visit, with a rent or lease agreement, the owner’s no-objection certificate and a utility bill not older than two months (Companies (Incorporation) Rules 2014, Rule 25). The registered office guide covers the difference from a corporate office and a branch.

Using this when you choose a name or a state

Every entity in these counts holds a name, and the Registrar refuses a new name that is identical to or too nearly resembles any of them, including struck-off names for two years. Check yours against the same register with the company name availability check before paying the reservation fee. If you are choosing a state for the registered office, the state table shows GST codes and our address counts, and each state’s explainer shows the GST facts that follow from an address there.

Method and caveats

  1. Source. Ministry of Corporate Affairs company master, published on data.gov.in as one file per state and union territory, imported in full.
  2. Counting. One row per CIN or LLPIN. State is the register’s own state field. Active means status “Active”; every other status (strike off, under process of striking off, dormant, under liquidation, amalgamated, dissolved) is counted in the total but not as active.
  3. Last twelve months. Incorporation dates in the twelve months ending on the newest incorporation date in the data.
  4. Cities. Parsed from the registered office address (the element before the district), matched with aliases to the cities SimplySetup lists; undercounts where the address names a locality instead.
  5. Refresh. Recomputed after each import of a new Ministry release; the data date is printed with the tables.
  6. Limits. The register records where companies are registered, not where they operate or how large they are. Address fields are free text and occasionally blank.

Figures as of 2 June 2026.

What to do next

If you are about to incorporate, check the name first, then decide the registered office state with the stamp duty and the GST facts side by side rather than defaulting to your home city. If you already have a company and need a presence in one of the states above, that is a GST registration with a place of business there, not a change of registered office; the second-state checklist walks through it. And if you want the registered office and the name application handled together, the Company Registration package does both.

  • Board-resolution format for MCA registered-office use (Company package)

How it works

  1. KYC & readinessYou share ID, entity details and the purpose; we confirm the address and jurisdiction match what you need.
  2. Rent agreement signedA rent / leave-and-licence agreement is executed between you and the space for the address.
  3. Notarised or registeredThe agreement is notarised, or registered where the state's Rent Control Act requires it, so it holds up in verification.
  4. GST / MCA filingWe prepare and file the GST registration or MCA incorporation, attaching the agreement, NOC, utility bill and signage photo.
  5. ApprovalIf the officer raises a query or show-cause notice we draft and file the reply; if a physical verification is scheduled we coordinate with the space.
  6. Start operatingGSTIN or CIN in hand, the address is live for invoices, letterheads and correspondence.

When it gets difficult

Most applications clear first time. When they don't, this is what we do — and what we don't.

  • Show-cause notice (SCN) — we read the officer's objection, draft the reply with the supporting documents and file it within the notice period. Included in the GST and Company packages.
  • Physical verification — we coordinate with the space so the signage, agreement and NOC are on site on the day. We cannot guarantee an officer's decision.
  • Rejection — we re-file with the corrected documents at no extra service fee.
  • Out of scope — we do not file GST returns, annual filings or accounting under these packages; those are separate services.

Questions people ask

Where does the data come from?

From the Ministry of Corporate Affairs company master published on data.gov.in, one file per state and union territory, listing every company and LLP with its CIN or LLPIN, registered office, status, class and date of incorporation. SimplySetup imports the files and computes the counts on this page; nothing is estimated.

How current is it?

The Ministry publishes the master periodically. The newest date of incorporation in the imported data is printed under each table; "last twelve months" means the twelve months ending on that date.

Why does a state's count include struck-off companies?

Because they are still on the register with a CIN. The Active column excludes them. A struck-off company's name stays blocked for two years, so the total matters when you are choosing a name.

What decides which state a company is "in"?

Its registered office under Section 12 of the Companies Act 2013, which fixes the Registrar of Companies and the state whose stamp duty applies to the incorporation documents. A company can have offices anywhere else; those are not on the register.

How are the city figures computed?

From the city element of the registered office address in the master file, matched to the cities SimplySetup lists virtual offices in, with common aliases (Bengaluru and Bangalore, Gurugram and Gurgaon, Kochi and Cochin). Addresses that name a suburb or district rather than the city are not counted, so city figures understate.

Does registering in a big state cost more?

Stamp duty on the memorandum, articles and the SPICe+ form is set by each state and differs, sometimes by a few thousand rupees on a small authorised capital. Government filing fees are the same everywhere. A registered office in another state through a virtual office is legitimate if the document kit is complete.

Can I cite these figures?

Yes, with the data date printed on the page and a link back. Quote the state table for totals and the Active column for live companies; the city figures are a lower bound because of how addresses are written.
